Dr Stephanie Bown

Stephanie is an experienced medico-legal specialist. She is a registered medical practitioner, an accredited mediator and has a degree in law. She practiced as a hospital doctor and a GP, was a senior executive at the Medical Protection Society (MPS) and a director of the National Clinical Assessment Service (NCAS) before moving into consultancy.

Stephanie has a deep understanding of the legal and regulatory framework in healthcare having managed cases and conducted investigations and reviews over more than 20 years. She has a thorough, analytical and evidence-based approach and an appreciation of the personal, political and reputational issues that often arise. She has successfully represented clinicians at all stages in their careers. She has undertaken independent investigations into serious incidents, governance and service reviews and performance concerns in individual practitioners. She provides training in shared decision making, systematic investigation techniques and duty of candour. She has worked with a wide range of trusts, commissioning organisations and private providers across the country.

Stephanie is a lay member of the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal and regularly mediates disputes for the Funeral Arbitration Scheme. Her specialist areas include investigations into serious incidents; professional conduct and performance, risk management and patient safety, mediation, conflict resolution and problem solving and training.
