Beverly graduated from University of Nottingham Medical School in 1991 and underwent training in obstetrics and gynaecology in Nottingham, Malta, and St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, before spending several years studying the effects of progesterone cream on menopause. She obtained the graduate diploma in law from BPP Law School and worked as a medico-legal adviser, initially for the Medical Protection Society and more recently for the Medical Defence Union.

Beverly continues to work on the telephone advice line for the Medical Defence Union and, after a year spent teaching aspects of medical law and ethics, professionalism, and patient safety to medical students at the University of Leeds, she now sits as a medical member for the Tribunals Service.
